The Philos...

Alumnae chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. recognized that there were extraordinary women who had a desire to serve their communities, but lacked baccalaureate degrees. Those women were of the highest character and many of them held prestigious positions in their religious affiliations, social organizations and were respected members of their communities.

Realizing the potential assets of these women, local chapters of Sigma organized these women into auxiliaries with various names. In 1943, the sorority adopted these assorted groups as Sigma affiliates. In 1954, the affiliates were given the name Philo, which means "friend" in Greek.

The Philos consists of women of high caliber, dedication, and commitment who share the sorority's principles of sisterhood and service. These Phenomenal women assist Sigma Gamma Rho with our numerous service-oriented projects and programs and social activities sponsored by their advising chapter. Additionally, Philos plan and implement their own activities. The Philos' main fundraiser, the First Lady Pageant, was established in 1980.

The Philos have adopted the colors of Gold & White and the White Carnation with a gold ribbon as their flower.
